Stories from the Steppe: A Silver Anniversary on the Frontier
By Esteban Carazo
Grit, History, and Endless Horizons
Most people celebrate their silver anniversary with a fancy dinner or a quiet beach resort. Not us. We wanted grit, history, and horizons that never end.
In our journey to visit 100 countries, a milestone we will complete in the coming weeks, we thought we’d seen it all. That was until we stepped into the vastness of the Gobi with Emma and the Boojum Expeditions team. We traded luxury for a "bumpy, dusty, and challenging" itinerary that allowed us to truly breathe in the wild steppe.

Our Top Anniversary Moments
The “Singing” Dunes of Khongoryn Els: Watching the desert sands meet the rocky mountains is a sight a camera simply cannot capture. It was our version of a romantic walk, challenging, breathtaking, and unforgettable.

Walking with Explorers: Standing where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs in 1922 felt like stepping back in history. Being able to speak with modern-day explorers on-site made the past feel incredibly present.

The Silence of Ger Life: No TV, no city noise, no distractions. Just the sound of the wind and the deep relaxation that comes from being truly "unplugged."
The True Frontier
Beyond the landscapes, our greatest memory of the Gobi is the people. All of Mongolia’s vast open spaces are complemented by smiles and warm hearts. There are very few places left in the world that hold onto true hospitality and kindness as fiercely as Mongolia does.
If you feel like you’ve been everywhere else, go to Mongolia with Boojum. It is one of the few places left on Earth that feels like a true frontier… and a home, all at the same time.

The holy grail of steppe sightings! On the long drive between the Yolyn Am and the dunes, we were treated to a rare guest appearance: a Marbled Polecat! Known for their bold patterns and even bolder personalities, these little predators are a symbol of the wild, untouched spirit of the Mongolian wilderness.
